LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles County health officials are warning consumers to steer clear of certain prescription drugs for use in patients with heart problems, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Health Department.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is advising consumers not to purchase the products, because they are being sold for recreational purposes.
“The drug’s benefits and potential for abuse may outweigh the risks to consumers. Consumers should always consult with their doctor before making any changes to their medication,” the department said.
“The risks associated with this drug are minimal, however, consumers should be aware that it is a prescription drug.”
People with congestive heart failure, liver disease and other serious medical conditions may not be prescribed the drugs they are prescribed. These include high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, as well as the elderly and people with certain medical conditions.
Los Angeles County Health Department officials said the drugs sold in the Los Angeles market were often for recreational use.
The drug is commonly known as Cozaar and is available in more than 100 generic versions. It was first manufactured by Merck, Inc. in 1996.
The Los Angeles County Department of Health said its patients are encouraged to keep a list of the products they have purchased. It is not uncommon for patients to order from a pharmacy or mail order store.
The department said consumers should always consult with their doctor before making any changes to their medication, and that the drugs should only be purchased for recreational purposes.
“This product is intended for use in the treatment of congestive heart failure, and is not intended to be abused in this manner. In fact, the drug is intended for use in the treatment of high blood pressure,” the department said.
“All prescription drugs should be discussed with a doctor before purchasing the drugs, and they should be evaluated for potential risks,” the department said.
Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said the products should not be used by patients with heart disease. Patients with congestive heart failure, liver disease and other serious medical conditions should not use the drugs.

“Consumers who are considering using the products should consult with their doctor before purchasing the drugs, and they should not self-medicate,” the department said.
“In the event that a patient purchases the drugs, their doctor will advise them to contact a licensed pharmacist at your nearest hospital pharmacy.”
